The industry-led initiative formerly known as SmartWay Europe, was launched under the new name GREEN FREIGHT EUROPE. Founder members of the group comprise over 30 companies, including multinational shippers, carriers, retailers and associations. The group aims to establish Green Freight Europe as the leading independent voluntary programme for improving environmental performance of road freight transport in Europe. The launch event took place in the Stanhope Hotel in Brussels in the presence of European Vice President and Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas and key figures of Europe's policy forming institutions and trade organisations.

About Climate TransAct

Climate TransAct was based on an initiative that started in the beginning of 2009 with a broad European stakeholder process in 2009, initiated by consulting firms partnering in the Green Logistics Consultants Group, co-funded by the French Environment and Energy Agency ADEME and strongly supported by the industry. This broad expert and stakeholder consultation process confirmed the need and significant interest in a common European approach and resulted in the creation of the SmartWay Europe Working Group within the framework of the Climate TransAct initiative. The objective of this group was to evaluate the SmartWay concept and tools as developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and their overall applicability for Europe. The SmartWay Europe Working Group, coordinated by Altimedes Consulting until the end of 2010, involved large companies from different industries: Deutsche Post DHL, Geodis, Heineken, IKEA, Kraft Foods, TNT and UPS. The recommendation to continue with the development of a SmartWay-like program in Europe was presented in October 2010 to a large group of companies and industry organisations and resulted in the current SmartWay Europe Working Group with representatives from a large group of companies from different sectors.

Climate TransAct will build on the very successful US Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay programme, the evaluation and testing of the transport performance based emissions monitoring and reporting concept by the SmartWay Europe Working Group and on existing sustainable freight transport programmes and tools developed by public authorities and industry associations in Europe.

Environmental or green procurement of transport services is defined as the purchase of transport services which have less impact on the environment and human health compared with competing transport services that serve the same purpose.

Potential benefits of green procurement of transport services include:

Climate TransAct will level the playing field with the industry as a neutral third-party and will create and manage common supporting tools and a central data base to assess the environmental footprint of transport activities and to calculate, validate and benchmark the environmental performance of carriers based on verified data input.

Climate TransAct will provide recognition and PR opportunities for participating shippers and transport companies and in particular for those demonstrating advanced practices and achieving superior levels of environmental performance.

Climate TransAct will foster closer carrier and shipper relationships. The Climate TransAct staff will provide company specific guidance to help carriers and shippers to evaluate and understand their environmental performance and opportunities for improvement.

Climate TransAct will be a European platform for the promotion of fuel and environmental efficiency transport strategies and technologies leading to an accelerated take up of clean transportation and logistics technologies by the transport and logistics industry.

Climate TransAct will provide the best and most accurate information available regarding fuel-saving measures and technologies currently on the market and will provide freight fleet managers and truck owners with the tools and information they need to make smart purchasing decisions and reduce their environmental impact while saving money in the process.

Our European approach will significantly contribute to realizing economies of scale, delivering a high acceptance rate by the transport industry and shippers which will lead to significant benefits for the environment, participating companies and eco-efficient technology providers.

To reach our goal we are creating a growing coalition of public authorities and the industry represented by major leading companies, transport companies, shippers, European and national associations – all committed to tackling climate change.
